Have you ever considered that a good skincare routine is self-care?

Well- it’s true! When you take care of your skin, you naturally feel better. No matter what your routine looks like, we could all use a little extra pampering and inner-peace. For more idea's on how to take care of your skin, be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Valentine’s Day has been called a variety of names. From ‘Gal’entines Day to Singles Day. Whether you celebrate the day or not, you should celebrate you! I use Valentine’s Day as the 6 week check-up on my progress since New Year. Am I on track, what adjustments can I make. One area to pay close attention to is skin care, after all, it is self-care.

Daily Skincare (repeat morning and night)

A great starter kit for morning self-care consists of high-quality products that you can get for an affordable price. Mature women know the importance of a great skincare routine, as your skin naturally produces less oil after 40. Using skincare as self-care in the morning is a healthy way to start your day.

Gently removing the built up oils on your skin from a good nights rest is important. (Okay, so maybe we’re not all getting a good nights rest, but we can look like we did!) Not stripping off too much oil, leaving your skin dry and flaky, is where the balance is found. I’ve washed my face with unrefined coconut oil for over 10 years and for someone who used to have oily skin, it’s been the biggest game changer in my routine. It leaves your skin feeling soft, with just the right amount of moisture and the best part, it wears well with your sunscreen, serums and foundation formula’s.

Washing with coconut oil: If you haven't given this a chance yet, I highly recommend it! Place a nickel-size amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hand, and rub it all over your face. This even works for removing makeup, so don’t worry about the mess! Next, run the water as hot as you can and get a washcloth wet. Ring out all the excess water, so the cloth is just steaming and the place is up against your face. You want the steam from the cloth to break up the oils and dirt on your face before wiping your face clean. Repeat this until you find no more coconut oil is left on your face. If you are new to this or have oily skin, you may notice a breakout in the first 7-10 days. After this, your face will adapt.

*Keep in mind that if you have eyelash extensions, this will break down the glue*

Aquaphor is a great way to show your lips some love with this moisturizing balm, but it doesn’t stop there. You can use this on dry elbows, knees, or hands after washing to promote supple skin. I like to start with Aquaphor as soon as I’ve brushed my teeth so my lips are moisturizing while I put the rest of my skin care and makeup on.

Green tea eye patches are a great way to make yourself feel pampered in the morning. Place one under each eye while you are getting ready in the morning, brushing your teeth, or while applying some lotion.

Wear sunscreen no matter what you have planned for the day. This is self-love that you deserve, and your skin’s health needs. Wearing sunscreen will protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This CeraVe is a great, affordable option with quality ingredients. Best part, it offers moisturizer and sunscreen together, saving time.

The final step before applying any makeup is to end your skin care routine with a serum containing Hyaluronic Acid. This must have ingredient promotes healthier, more supple skin while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient found in the body, also known as hyaluronan. It binds to water to help retain moisture. Whether you have dry skin, combination skin or oily skin, women over 40 need this intense hydrating ingredient in our daily skin care routine. In addition to its benefits when used topically, hyaluronic acid can be found in injectables used by dermatologists because of its ability to make the skin appear firmer. It’s starting to show up in more and more make-up products, at affordable prices. From tinted moisturizer, like True Match by Loreal to waterproof mascara like this favorite of mine from LaRoche-Posey.

Skincare means caring for all of our skin, and that includes our body. Applying a daily moisturizer can help reduce the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness. In addition to re-hydrating dried skin, a quality moisturizer can add a barrier to your skin, keeping moisture in for longer-lasting benefits. Finding a moisturizer for your skin that goes beyond hydration plays a key role as we age. Ingredients like Niacinamide, DL Lipids, Ribose and of course you guessed it, Hyaluronic Acid, each play a role in keeping our mature skin lifted, smoother-looking, hydrated and firmer. So while we focus on our face and neck, we can't over look the rest of our body! The daily moisturizer I reach for when it comes to carrying for my body is City Beauty's InvisiCrepe Body Balm. Our skin as been with us for many years, protected us from the elements, kept us cool, moist and warm. It may look a little different than it did 40+ years ago, but if we show it some love this Valentine’s Day, it will respond!

I hope this inspires you to do some skincare for self-care.

Many blessings,

Jodi
