A simple search online will tell you that there are thousands of different health and beauty items you need to try but how do you know which ones are worth it? To help you filter through the noise here are 10 non-makeup essentials you need in your toolkit.
We all have those days when it’s a struggle to keep our eyes open. To relieve the appearance of tired red eyes and minor irritations lumify eye drops are the way to go. They’ll keep your eyes looking bright all day long!
Hydrating Moisturizer
As we mature our skin begins to lose elasticity and especially moisture retention. To show your skin a little love use a soothing moisturizer with hyaluronic acid that hydrates and leaves you looking radiant. This can be a tricky category so first ask yourself what type skin do you have. Dry, combo or oily. For dry skin, I prefer LaRoche Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer with Niacinamide because of its hydrating ingredients that lasts up to 48 hours, but it also has glycerin and niacinamide to sooth and repair the skin. It's lightweight enough to wear under your foundation or without foundation and hydrating enough to wear as your nighttime moisturizer as well!
For combination skin, Estee Lauder's Day Wear contains Super Anti-Oxidant Complex and Broad Spectrum sunscreen. It reduces the first signs of aging, like dullness and fine, dry lines.
Oily skin also has several options and it can be overwhelming. The one I love is SkinMedica Ultra Shear Moisturizer because it contains vitamin E and C (both of which neutralize free radicals in the environment) and hyaluronic acid. It's lightweight formula makes it the perfect 'over serum-under foundation' staple.
Everyday Sunscreen
We all know that wearing sunscreen is a must but how many of us forget to use it daily? UV exposure is the top contributor to skin damage but can be easily avoided. In fact, I start everyday with 2 pumps of LaRoche Posay's Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum SPF 50 after washing my face. From there,
I'll add serum, moisturizer and foundation - in that order. Protect your skin and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation by adding a light broad-spectrum sunscreen to your anti-aging skincare routine.
Vitamin C Serum
To brighten your complexion and ease the appearance of sunspots, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant for smoothing hyperpigmentation. A few drops gently massaged in before your favorite moisturizer and sunscreen are guaranteed to transform the look and feel of your skin. You can find 100's, literally, of Vitamin C products on the market. Vitamin C is a product that can be unstable to packing is a critical part of the selection process. I've been using Neutrogena's Rapid Tone Repair Vitamin C Serum Capsules for the past 6 months. I use one every 3 days and can speak to the effectiveness of these little capsules! My skin texture is more bright, smooth and looks tighter. Here's a video on my entire skincare routine: https://youtu.be/TrqgZI0SNXg
An eyelash curler is a toolkit essential. With mascara or without, a quick press extenuates your eyes by boosting volume and creating an appearance of extra length. Simply curl at the base for easy application and a lifted doe-eyed look. For a longer lasting lash, gently heat your lash curler by holding it in front of your blow dryer for 5-8 seconds.
Take your brow and mascara game to the next level. With a few simple strokes, a spoolie brush will groom your brows as well as blend your makeup for a fluffier brow with a natural finish. If you’re struggling with clumpy mascara or have accidentally used too much product using a spoolie is a simple solution to separate the lashes. This spoolie brush has an eyeliner/eyebrow brush on the other end!
Investing in a good pair of tweezers is always a good idea. This multi-purpose tool is perfect for shaping and transforming your brows as well as applying false lashes with easy precision. As we age, we find less use for our eyebrows and more for well, everyday brings a new hair somewhere that doesn't belong.
Bring the spa experience home for an ageless complexion. Using a gua sha set or a face roller during your anti-aging skincare regime will sculpt your facial features, promote blood flow and decrease fluid build-up for firmer, brighter skin. I was skeptical about the impact this little tool would really have on my face. While the results are dramatic, rubbing the cool roller (I keep mine in the freezer) over my face is a refreshing way to start my day!
Boar-bristle Hair Brush
Boar-bristle brushes are a perfect addition to your styling kit. With soft bristles that effortlessly slide through your hair, they are master detanglers that are known to reduce breakage. Because the barrel doesn't retain hot heat like a metal round brush, you're not burning your hair halfway through your blowout. They gently massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation and help distribute the natural oils in your hair to keep it looking fresh. My favorite boar bristle brush is a Spornet 2 in Boar Bristle brush. The handle is easy to hold and turn while holding my blowdryer in the other hand. Making professional looking blowouts easier to achieve.
Ionic Hair Dryer
Say no to dry, frizzy ends, and yes to a healthier hair routine. Swap out your old hair dryer for one that uses ionic technology for a hydrated smooth finish. Trust me, it’s a game-changer! I've talked about this dryer before in many hair video's as it continues to be my everyday go-to. The ghd Air 1600 Professional is so good, I bought one in London with the needed 230V so I would have it when traveling for work.
I hope these basic, yet powerful, essentials help keep your tool-kit a valuable resource for looking your best today and always.
